It has all the East Coasty Havisham chic in it that you could ever ask for. The film is an intimate look at the relationship between mother and daughter, between social classes, and what happens when things don't quite go to plan. If you haven't seen it I suggest renting both that and the musical inspired by it which I find equally interesting visually. It's all very eau de decaying streetcar with a dash of whatever happened to baby jane. While watching the film at points is heart-breaking their eccentric style is unmistakable and has inspired both fashion and interior designers. If after seeing the film you find you want more there are two new books that may tide you over, Eva Marie Beale's Edith Bouvier Beale of Grey Gardens: A Life in Pictures and the cleverly named MemoraBEALEia: A Private Scrapbook About Edie Beale of Grey Gardens First Cousin To First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (that is a mouthful) from Walter Newkirk. By the time you have made it through both books you may be just in time for the film adaptation with Jessica Lange, Drew Barrymore, and Daniel Baldwin, to hit a theater near you.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SOBtk_RHJ3I/AAAAAAAAAKw/cl5OHVtDFng/s200/barry.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251317647739922290" />

Drew Barrymore, on set, as Little Edie in "Grey Gardens"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SOBtlbQSNOI/AAAAAAAAAK4/8IAmymn7RRY/s200/drew_barrymore_102307_02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251317655252645090" />

Poolside...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SNgsylc40YI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/7EFb7CxWlY0/s200/%2B10_062HB_02AUG08_140-de-56241342.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248994613258670466" />
I have to say October is really bringing it pictorially in many of my favorite periodicals. One of my favorites right now is the Harper's Bazaar photo shoot/interview with Kirsten Dunst. For some reason there seems to be a lot of division on the interweb about Kirsten's personal style etc. I personally think she is both a talented actress and beautiful girl. In the Harper's photos she rocks one of my favorite Bill Blass Resort 2009 ensembles and the photos call to mind the photography of Slim Aarons and, dare I say it, the beautiful C.Z. Guest. While I may not be picking up any of the Bill Blass items from the photos I may invest in a one of the beautiful parasols from Bella Umbrella Kirsten carries while poolside.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SNgsy068wVI/AAAAAAAAAKY/wdKn6mqqqfs/s200/thumbnail.php.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248994617411289426" />

Falling for Autumnal Colors

Every year as Fall approaches i want to repaint all the whites and blues to colors like aubergine or something the color of butternut squash, pumpkin pie, crisp and crunch apples, roasted turkey (ok maybe not roasted turkey). You might be able to guess what is governing my color choices; my stomach! But seriously, don't we all find ourselves gravitating to tattersall, glen plaids, and velvets in deep rich colors that say warmth and comfort? That being said I think sometimes these seasonal cravings take on a life of their own and become, dare I say, a touch contrived/kitschy. Somehow lumberjack plaids don't always equally convey comfort and elegance.

While flipping through October's House Beautiful I became so taken with Hal Williamson's design for a New Orleans home filled with dusky lavender, a strangely appealing mauve (?), and a beautiful apple color. It doesn't scream HAYRIDE! PUMPKINS! CIDER! but seems to whisper a seasonal shift in an understated versatile way. With simple seasonal editing of decorative elements this home has year round appeal. OK and to be honest even if these don't make you think of fall, who cares because are these disgusting gorgeous or what?

Photographs all John Kernick for House Beautiful

Seven

With Halloween right around the corner my mind turns to the fabulous gothic creations of Douglas LIttle and Company. You may know him from his exquisite candle line featuring scents of poisonous plants as well as signature fragrances for Barney's and a special edition candle honoring Tony Duquette. For those unfamiliar with the young style maker, think of him as Oscar Wilde with a dash of Dickens and a gothic bent. One of my personal favorite's offered from Maison Little has always been his collaborative effort with Mrs. John L. Strong to create a set of stationary labeled with the seven deadly sins. The set also comes with seven black votives inscribed with the sins in gold script in a beautiful black silk box. It is of note that limited edition black dessert plates with the golden vices were available as well. In the last week as retailers have begun to set out the beginnings of the Halloween merch I have seen two different sets of deadly sins dishware. The first set below was actually featured in the Fall edition of O at Home and is available from Trixie Delicious at Etsy. The second set is from the ever ...ahem..."trendy" Z Gallerie. So is this the beginning of a trend? Or just something seasonal? Would you purchase any of them? I am skeptical. When France's presidential couple, Nicolas and Carla-Bruni Sarkozy made their way to London several weeks ago to forge friendships and gain the hearts of the English people, the newly anointed Mrs. Sarkozy garnered just such a label for her stylish Dior ensembles; "The New Jackie." For those unfamiliar with Carla Bruni she is a former supermodel and most recently had turned singer-songwriter to some success (yes, I have her CDs). I personally think she is a stunning beauty, obviously since the modeling background, and a talented singer, but it is difficult for me to make the jump that she is the NEW Jackie. I mean, the same week that she was in London they were auctioning off nude photo's of her at Christie's. What page of "What Would Jackie Do?" is that on? Headlines read, "Carla Bruni, French President Nicolas Sarkozy's Wife, Channels Jackie Onassis During State Visit To Britain"; and my personal favorite "Carla gets a make-O-ver." Fashion wise I have to agree she is light years ahead of any woman in the American political landscape, however, wasn't Jackie more than just a fashion plate? Jacqueline Kennedy is for most a beloved icon that continues to inspire women of all ages not only because of her classic looks and good taste, but she also continues to inspire by her attitude and actions. I am anxious to see how the Bruni's public persona as the First Lady of France develops. I really hope she does disprove my skepticism and turn out to be just as poised, elegant, graceful and benevolent as Jackie. The world could use a return to style and grace.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SBTKuo6yI6I/AAAAAAAAAJQ/3qgu_Jt8-yM/s200/image.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5193999172871791522" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SBTKuo6yI5I/AAAAAAAAAJI/yc4koSDvURk/s200/SPX-01965640085.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5193999172871791506" />

For comparison....

Well-scripted scents...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SBAdYY6yIuI/AAAAAAAAAHw/7R662TOYXCs/s200/24908205.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192682675201254114" />For the book-addicted out there, a lovely new reference(?) book has just hit the shelves. Perfumes: The Guide, by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, is an in depth chronicling of over 1200 different fragrances. The scientist and perfume critic (respectively) give the reader a description for each fragrance, offering historical anecdote, the notes contained in the fragrance, and finally a review. The introduction reads somewhat like a beginner’s guide to fragrance F.A.Q, answering burning questions like the difference between eau de toilette and eau de parfum, when does a perfume expire, perfume seasonality etc. However, even if you are a self-styled fragrance expert I’m sure you will find something interesting that you did not know before. Big bonus points, this book has a delicious and snarky sense of humour at points. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SBAdm46yIvI/AAAAAAAAAH4/PrRwlwTMuJg/s200/Z_41504.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192682924309357298" />
Lalique Anemone Perfume Bottle, available through Vivre

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SBAduY6yIwI/AAAAAAAAAIA/Je9IPeZvUq8/s200/main.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192683053158376194" />This book would be a great gift for the avid perfume collector or even for someone interested in beauty and style (Early reminder, Mother’s Day is May 11). Perhaps you could package a lovely perfume bottle with it or a favorite fragrance. My personal fragrance suggestions are:
For Ladies:
Burberry Touch For Men- I know this is a men’s fragrance but every time I wear it both men and women almost immediately compliment me. Likewise it smells absolutely fabulous on both.
Creed Virgin Island Water- This is an excellent for summer. To often I find that limited edition summer scents smell like a variant of either sunscreen or one of those fruity tropical drinks served in a gigantic glass with umbrellas and whatnot. This smells exactly like its name, crisp, cool and tropical. It is such a beautiful smell.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SBAomo6yI0I/AAAAAAAAAIg/umslMHxHlIE/s200/CR_019_VIRGIN_ISLAND.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192695014642295618" />Narciso Rodriquez For Her: I love this smell, and apparently so does everyone else because almost every time I try to purchase this it is sold out ( I guess we are all running out at the same time). This fragrance is for sexy nights out. Wear with caution, it also garners "compliments," of the unsolicited amorous variety.

For Men:
Creed Green Irish Tweed- This is what a man should smell like. Period.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SBAd8Y6yIyI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/U9LoU0aoePk/s200/CR_007_GRN_IRISH.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192683293676544802" />

India Indeed So Sublime

This weekend I had the pleasure of viewing the Rhythms of India exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Art. While it focused mostly on the artist Nandalal Bose it also featured beautiful pieces by the artist Rabindranath Tagore. For India these artists represented something akin to our arts and crafts artists, as they sought to get back to the roots of Indian art and bringing back traditional schools, or ashrams, for the study of art. This was at the time in India right before the country gained it's independence and much of their art reflects the struggle under British colonial rule. They were contemporaries of, as well as aquaintances with a most notable individual, Mahatma Gandhi.
This exhibit inspired me to really explore (via my home unfortunately) more of India. To go on this journey yourself you will need the following:

Books:
Since Courteny over at StyleCourt has introduced everyone to Mughal Decoration and Rajasthan, I will suggest two new titles.
India Sublime: Princely Palace Hotels of Rajasthan. Film-maker Satyajit Ray makes films that are simply beautiful in every since of the word. Beautiful visually , and beautiful in an emotional way, perhaps poetic is the right word. The trilogy chronicles the life of Apu and is like most great movies, a coming of age story. If all the acclaim isn't enough to pull you in maybe an orginal score composed by Ravi Shankar will. Wes' ever whimsical take on the broken family is no less stunning in his most recent film effort. Rent this movie and watch the featurette first, in which they discuss the hundreds of artisans that hand-painted the interiors and exteriors of the train as well as china for the dining car, hand-blocked fabric, and carved custom screens for the interiors. Even if you watch the actual film on mute (which you shouldn't because the music and dialogue are worth listening too) you need to see it because of Anderson's ability to make such well-edited and visually stunning scenes and sets. Did I forget to say stunning? During just one of the episodes Tony is cooked for by a Maharana, gives us a slice of Bollywood, has a martini at The Lake Palace hotel just like Roger Moore in Octopussy, gets to stay at the luxe Devi Gahr , shops for vividly coloured spices and veg at a streetside vending stand, visits a modern and high tech guru, drinks hallucinogenic drinks, watches a camel race and a beauty contest judged by how much hair one has on their face (don't worry it was for men). Can you even handle both episodes???
Once you are done watching this, or while you are you may be tempted to indulge in some Indian cuisine, my suggestion is lamb vindaloo and if you are really getting into it some chai (not that stuff from that ubiquitous coffee chain though. yeah, you know who I mean), but iced just to help with the spice of the vindaloo.

Rough Point Revisited

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SAA0Z4uojtI/AAAAAAAAAGk/iJUJNT4qad0/s200/Image886.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188204390060166866" />I constantly find myself intrigued by fellow Sagittarian Doris Duke, as I'm sure many of you are. I think many of us are swept away by the entire idea of her painfully beautiful life. Known by most as a wanderlust stricken heiress, many design lovers know her for sense of style and prolific and diverse collections and her patronage of the arts. Doris' left behind her ecclectic legacy, in part, by her many homes. Her summer home in Newport boasts Frederick Law Olmsted (Central Park, Biltmore Estate) lawns and gardens and beautiful promontories looking out over the ocean. Doris spent her summers there, occaisonally in the company of exotic animals such as camels.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SAA0w4uojuI/AAAAAAAAAGs/R6P25d3Trzw/s200/jetsetroughpt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188204785197158114" />Rough Point, was originally built by Frederick Vanderbilt and later purchased by Doris' father in the early 20's. The home is now in the hands of the Newport Restoration Society. Doris herself founded the Newport Restoration Society in 1968.
Now ( I hope I'm not behind on this) Pindler & Pindler, like so many of us, have drawn on one of those homes, Rough Point, as the inspiration for a series of fabric in their Newport Mansions line. Here are Pindler & PIndler's descriptions of the fabrics:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/SAA0-4uojvI/AAAAAAAAAG0/wEAcfoc6bIs/s200/Pindler-NMDD-Seville+Large.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188205025715326706" />Duquette-"...was inspired by a Chinese silk satin embroidered wall hanging which originally belonged to Doris Duke’s mother Nanoline; then later carefully installed as a bed canopy in Miss Duke’s bedroom. Duquette is an exquisite and elegant rendition holding true to the original document with careful attention to every subtle detail. Duquette is embroidered on a 100% silk satin ground which allows for a sumptuous, alluring, yet quiet elegance. Duquette is offered in two colorways and is shown in Seville" (left, in photo above)

Valencia- "Valencia was inspired by an 18th century hand-painted silk wall-covering found in Doris Duke’s Music Room at Rough Point. Valencia is woven with a 100% silk face on a wire loom incorporating both a cut velvet texture and, in certain areas, left uncut for an interesting epingle that complements the velvet. Both textures are offset by the Egyptian mercerized cotton satin ground, which is a smooth, sleek contrast to the luxurious two textures. Valencia is constructed by the use of the very best silk weaving looms and silk velvet yarns. This three color fabric is achieved by weaving on triple beams which is a very costly and time consuming technique. Valencia is offered in five colorways and is shown in Seville."(right, in photo above)

So what do you think of the fabrics? Our assignment was to fill a 3" binder, till fear of busting, with photos of interiors that we loved and to basically put in an index (we also had to do research on specific painters and color theorists but that accounted for maybe 20% of the binders actual content). This was an easy task for me in that I had untold resources, you see friends, I have a condition, I hoard magazines. I even have a room for only magazines (well a storage closet that is 5'X5'), a magazine annex. It is out of control there are neatly organized, categorized filled shelves but to the floor spills mayhem and chaos, a veritable riot of periodicals...and they have begun to take over the guest bedroom closets also. I just can't seem to part with them. So the difficulty for me in this assignment was having to actually cut out of the magazine (HORROR!!!). I tried to explain to my classmates why this was such a bad thing, ("but how will you source things later?") but they didn't seem to relate. So what do you do? Do you cut out your inspiration photos-or- are you a periodical piler?

Some things on my mind lately...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/R-tHMEVzhSI/AAAAAAAAAGU/TOxmHzJvOkY/s200/MSB9_250.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182314068869088546" />
OK you may have guessed out the gate that this has nothing to do with design, or maybe it kind of does in a totally vague and abstract way. Anyway I just need to kind of get this off my chest.

Where the hell have peoples manners gone? Is it all people all over the country? Is it transcontinental and globe covering this rudeness that everyone seems to have caught?
I have just about had it up to here with the countless people I run into on a daily basis who are just rude. The other day on a RARE occasion someone walking in a door as I was walking out of it held the door open to which I replied, "I appreciate it." Now this may be one of those little Southern expressions that other people are uninitiated to but in the South that is interchangeable with thank-you (which is something else I hear less and less frequently). The person looked at me quizzically registering an expression of surprise that I had offered any gratitude at all. That my friends cuts to the core of my problem. At what point did manners become something delightfully unexpected? If I have one more person rudely shove me, or bump into me while so intent and busy to get to wherever they are going without an excuse me or I'm sorry I almost reenacted a moment of the Iron Bowl just then, I will lose my manners and scream at that person (in my fantasies) or at the very least give them a withering glare. There are a lot of other things lately that also just make me question what is happening to people, specifically some personal experiences that have just left me a little bruised and irritated. When did people become so damned self-centered that they can't even hold doors, or say excuse me, thank-you and let's not hope for sir or ma'am. Where I come from hospitality is generously given as is gratitude and thanks. I don't know if this is making sense because I don't want to write anything to personal but I just wish people would stop being so self-centered and behave a little more conscientiously and graciously. I guess you can't expect much from strangers though when the people you actually associate are inconsiderate.
So to sum up just in case people out there don't know if you are a guest in someone's home, you are just that a GUEST. While your host wants you to be comfortable, you in turn should be thankful and not make your host/hostess' life a living hell. If you are an hour and half away and gas costs $3.60 and I'm a girl who will be driving alone both ways do not give me a guilt trip for bowing out on your invitation to a lunch that is going to be shorter than the drive. Oh yeah and I also have had the flu whether you believed it or not and declined so I wouldn't get your kids sick.That's right I was thinking of YOUR best interest, novel concept You may also want to practice not snorting in disbelief when someone tells you they are sick and then acting like a spoiled and wounded child. If you are coming into town to see someone else and want to make time for me that is great but if the time you are making for me is realistically just to use my home as a truck stop and bathroom break on the way to the other people, please don't bother you are obviously on a tight schedule. As am I, which is why you shouldn't leave your 15 minute poddy break arrival window to "Friday night, Saturday morning whatever" so that I put an two thirds of my weekend on hold for 15 minutes of you being self-absorbed and pontificating just for you to leave abruptly. So, no not "whatever", I am an adult I have things I need to do, things in the coming week I need to make preparations for. Even the cable guy gives you a day with a five hour window and calls ahead. Okay I guess I went ahead and made it personal....

Icicles forming in hell...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/R61L-DWVicI/AAAAAAAAAGM/X6EEwg6XnJs/s200/cover_lucky_146.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164867877086792130" />So something momentous happened today, and I'm not talking about completely spacing on putting any of the 8 windows into my final floor plan for drafting, I saw the new Louis Vuitton specialty bags....and... dare I actually admit this? I love them! Ok now that I have said that I have to add that I think my color theory class is affecting my judgment. I just love the frenetic vibrant colors. They are really eye-catching. * Another thing they have going for them is that the monogram is slightly obscured by the beautiful colors, and to be honest that is my main complaint with Vuitton bags to begin with (if you want an LV bag just get a nice epi leather why do you need the monogram plastered all over everything?). Also neato, they are a collaborative effort with artist Richard Prince. If you aren't familiar with his work, I think the best way to describe him would be artistic witty/humorous philosopher. His work is worth checking out, these bags included.
That all being said I don't think I would ever actually carry one. I do think it is a beautiful piece of color inspiration though.
In other news make sure to check out Lucky for March, and get to "shop" with Ruthie Sommers in Waterworks. (I was more interested in the pretty blue dress she had on.)

*Editorially speaking every review I have found says these bags are just awful... you be the judge.

Dawnridge

I'm sure that we are all still taking in the sumptious content in our new Tony Duquette book. If you are a Mary McDonald look forward to her completely leopard covered room, or the hip pad of Ames Ingaham. Just in time to fulfill your New Years resolutions the issue is packed with organizational advice, including the streamlining of actress Rashida Jone's, of The Office, tiny NYC apartment. This article gives good tips on space planning and hiding unsightly storage. Also if you are revamping your closet to a full out glam dressing room be sure to check out the exclusive web section on vanities. I have started on the tree but it is still unfinished. I don't know why but I just really love, love, love the white trees. I know they aren't for everyone but I think they have the ability to be fun and hip, but beautiful and elegant as well. I suppose it just depends on what you are going for. This year I am decorating in blues, reds and blacks.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/R1EUNm7gPBI/AAAAAAAAAE8/oGz7LigUAt4/s200/CIMG1143.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5138910873827425298" />For wrapping I chose red on red stripes, silver faux bois, and a black and white scroll like pattern. I wanted to have had the house painted before I moved in but I am already expecting guest next weekend! The first guest bed arrived yesterday and the second guest bed arrives on Saturday... whew. anyways, some progress is being made... I still have tons to do obviously as it is only my second night staying in this house, my friends keep reminding me I don't have to have everything done immediately and to take my time. That being said, I know the longer you wait the less likely you are to do something, even it is as simple as taking out the trash or doing laundry. So here's to doing things in a timely manner.

Moving Day!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/R0Pjio3P03I/AAAAAAAAAEM/WN6Wpqylz_A/s200/CIMG1050.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5135198184356696946" />
This is the scene of my first couple hours inside my new home. Champagne and cleaning products ya'll. I cleaned everything and prepped the space for all of my things. Furniture has begun to arrive already. When I got to the house this morning with another car full of stuff there was a big happy Kartell box on my doorstep (yay!). Very exciting stuff. My dog, Ghillie, isn't sure how he feels about the space yet. I took him on the tour, he followed me around, then went downstairs, put his quail doll in his mouth and marched right out to the garage and back into the car (where he stayed until I was finished unpacking). I'm sure it will grow on him, after all any dog would be excited to gain a yard right? My goal is to have everything moved by the weekend, and start painting by next week. I promise you guys will get the first look at the paint colors!

Maison Crane

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RzqaKXjr7GI/AAAAAAAAADs/1ms70_hd36M/s200/733.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5132584228255165538" />
So by Friday I should have the keys to my very first house, at which point I will busily set forth making it a home, and subjecting all of you to the details (mwa ha ha). I am so excited to end apartment life and all that it entails. It will be really rewarding to be putting our money into something that is actually ours. One of the things I am most excited about is having an outdoor space to grow things in. I dunno their format just didn't really call to me. However, the more and more I get to know the publication the more I enjoy it for their particular artistic value. One of their greatest features are their fabric swatch displays. They are always creatively constructed and make it interesting instead of seeing the usual squares of textile. This month they have blown me away with their swatch portraits. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RzLrhuwcOQI/AAAAAAAAADc/PCu9ZocYQEU/s200/CIMG1033.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130421890247833858" />Amazing! I don't know if you can tell that these are constructed from fabrics, from the photos, but that is what is kind of brilliant about them. I thought it was an article on paintings at first. Yesterday when I walked into our new Carolina Herrera I was struck by how masculine and modern feeling the shop was. As you can tell from my photos (sorry...i took them on my mobile) the lighting was very dim, it was only 1 pm. The shop had a modern gentleman's club feel to it with warm wooden paneling and recessed television screens flashing images of C.H. Jr in beautiful C.H. clothing. I was struck by how different the interior of the shop is compared to both Carolina Herrera and her daughter's private residences. I suppose you have to design with your clients in mind.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/Ry1upscTuiI/AAAAAAAAADM/MMJeC7TnOzU/s200/CIMG0810.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128877213228448290" />On a more feminine note,if you are a girl who loves presentation when it comes to your purchases like I do, I have to say they have beautiful packaging. I am a big believer in packages that look as though they are gifts... all this was missing was black satin ribbon. Anywho, if any of you happen to be in the San Diego area around say next weekend, you may want to stop into the store and see the the Mother-Daughter style duo in person as they celebrate the Grand Opening of the stores San Diego location.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Here is a beautiful dark setting styled by Douglas Little, modern alchemist at large, from House and Garden. I love this image because as the caption states it doesn't matter if things are in or out, use them with wit and it will look good. I love the idea of a Victorian Miss Havisham type subtely dark Halloween rather than the cutesy stuff. Carolyne Roehm mentions in her book "Passion for Parties" that she went for a Miss Havisham look also.
So hope ya'll had a Happy Halloween and it was spooky enough nad sweet enough too!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RylOUccTufI/AAAAAAAAAC0/pvOU53zqZmc/s200/HG3_06_wide.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127715763877296626" />

What I L-O-V-E right now.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RyV4ZccTucI/AAAAAAAAACc/ZXK85ArJEeE/s200/IMG_0988.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126636129358166466" />Without keeping you in suspense: Nail-head trim on upholstered anything! Maybe it has something to do with Fall. Fall makes me think of deep upholstered furniture and masculine studies. I love to see it used unexecpetedly, like M. Redd's zebra upholstered doors (I keep trying to find an area of my own home to do this in but I don't think I'm as terribly glamorous as Mr. Redd), and this home in the current issue of Cottage Living.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RyV6L8cTudI/AAAAAAAAACk/qtjEtx2H0Tw/s200/fran_front_v.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126638096453188050" />Interior designer Fran Keenan used upholstery with nailhead trim on her entrance to great effect. But then again if you are like me and don't know if you could pull off anything so chic without professional assistance you could always opt for these ridiculously neat croc-embossed nailhead stacking cubes from Dransfield and Ross. I think I may get them for my bathroom instead of an etagere. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RyV6T8cTueI/AAAAAAAAACs/RcEIBgkEDUM/s200/T-5369_buff_enlarge.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126638233892141538" />

Evacuation Destination

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RzXNO-wcORI/AAAAAAAAADk/QV_k0D2ubgs/s200/img186.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131233007706585362" />
UPDATE: we are safe and sound, and were allowed back into our neighborhood. Luckily nothing to worry about although some of our friends didn't have quite the same luck. So please continue to keep Southern California in your thoughts and send positive thoughts this way.

So me and my new chair along with various sundry valuables that we could pack in the cars(wedding photos and dress, out of print books, paintings, dog and last but not least my Husband) followed a mandatory evacuation from our neighborhood to avoid the fires. Hopefully this will get cleared up as soon as possible, they say at most three days (damned Santa Ana's). But I guess the good news is I guess I won't be taking that History of Interiors exam tomorrow.
Anyways just wanted to say that I hope all of you in Southern California are staying safe and remember that things can be replaced but you and your loved ones cannot.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20071022-1224-bn22fire4.html

Domino's Design Contest

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RwxGUBtdw1I/AAAAAAAAACU/6YRBNl8vpRo/s200/gasl_sweeps_07oct_7_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5119544186283869010" />
I really love checking out the places featured in Domino's little contest. They get increasingly better everytime the gallery is updated. I am interested to see who will win, and also would love to know how many of the people who entered are actually in the design field themselves. Likewise it would be interesting to know which ones had used a designer in the process. I would be really impressed and excited to know if none of them were designers/had help and that there was just a bunch of people out there with great taste. That being said there are a couple on there that, there are some that are ummm not my favorites. For some of them I find it hard to believe they read Domino at all. Anyways hope everyone is having a great beginning to Fall.

Time Flies When You're Having Fun

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RwrziBtdw0I/AAAAAAAAACM/D1KiDzc9kf4/s200/15MinutesWSandGroupF7.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5119171692360221506" />
Or at least let's hope so, even though I'm not having "fun." Today I signed the contract for my first house. Totally nerve-wracking. Mainly because I was at work and I had to have the contract faxed to me, at a Kinko's, because we do not have a fax where I work. So 80$ and a lunch hour melt-down later, the contract was signed and faxed back from whence it came. Inspection is on Friday so now it is just waiting till close I hope ( hopefully no issues at the inspection). Thankfully my Mother makes it on Thursday and will be able to go with me. Hopefully this will go by very quickly and I can begin to make my living place an actual home, and not have to worry about roommates. I cannot wait. I am very excited and can't wait to share pictures with ya'll once I get started.
As an informal Q&A drop me a line about your favorite washer and dryer and why they make your life amazing as I am in the market for a set.
OK and originally I was going to write about how I am seeing hourglasses all over and how they are the new Foo Dog/mounted Horn for this year, but I got sidetracked. So anyway, pictures of the new house forth-coming, I hope ya'll will like it.

Look What I Got...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RwMSWxtdwyI/AAAAAAAAAB8/IQJUW62VtXE/s200/CIMG0520.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116953784133468962" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/RwMSXBtdwzI/AAAAAAAAACE/yJazdl8XQOI/s200/CIMG0522.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116953788428436274" />
In my first entry back, I thought I would share my new purchase. Try to disregard the apartment carpet and blinds. This early 19th century teak Dutch colonial chair is not only beautiful but useful as well. As you can see it unhinges and becomes a four foot high ladder. Ingenious no? It was a little expensive (or at least my husband will think it was) but totally worth it. I found it while on a "self-guided field trip" to Solana Beach for my intro to interiors class. Even though the program is pretty intense you gotta love any school that requires you to spend a saturday shopping.

In other news, glad to finally be back! With that in mind I have recently been on the search for the perfect bar cart... here are the ones I have found so far that I think could be winners.
First up a lovely lacquered goatskin in a really beautiful and summery aqua color from Belvair at $2200 (available through 1stDibs). Second another lovely find at 1st Dibs through Susane R. This one I particularly like becuase of it's chinoiserie detail as well as the detachable tray top making it a really multi-functional piece. At $1400 this possible Maison Jansen piece would make a beautiful addition to any home. The last two are both available from Restoration Hardware, the Hanover and Campaign respectively are both under $800 and have classic features that make them beautiful and great for any interior.

Living Room Story Board

<img style="display:block; To the left you can see a bed made with heaping piles of Anthro bed linens, wedged mid-way between the many layers are serveral cans of peas. I saw the display before I actually saw the book, but immediately knew the reference and it made me smile. I'm not sure if the other stores have a similar display set up so I thought I would share it with you because I thought it was adorable. The book is equally adorable and would make a cute gift for any little girl.
Whilst on the subject just a reminder that Anthropologie is having a sale on their upholstered furniture.

Out and About: La Jolla

Today I went shopping in La Jolla and to one of my favourite shops there, Seaside Home. Seaside Home has first and foremost an excellent selection of design and art books to choose from. They carry Baker furniture, Janus et Cie, William Yeoward crystal and more. This is a truly beautiful store with very polite and helpful staff. Before you drop by start you day off right with breakfast at Nine-Ten within the Colonial Hotel. I recommend the Nine-Ten omelet, yummy.
The shop is two floors of goodness. I am personally in love with the needlepoint leopard throw pillows seen in the photo to the left, they are absolutely brill.

Von Fabulous

In the nineties the Miller sisters were "it" girls of the New York and international social scene. Two out of three married princes (technically), the third marrying an oil heir. Fast forward to now, two out of three are amicably divorced, one retains the title of princess, and all three seem to have begun to lead more of a private and/or quiet lifestyle. That being said, my favorite of the three, Alexandra Miller von Furstenberg is featured in this May's Vogue. In the article they take a look at Alexandra's home in L.A., that she shares with her two children. It seems like a clean, bright, laid-back Californian space, which by the tone of the article is what Alexandra was seeking after leaving both a gossip laden New York and "dark" London. What caught my attention most was the interesting fireplace treatment that Alexandra had schemed up. She placed huge glass diamonds on black boxes within each fireplace. This is so random but I think it looks really pretty, and I'm thinking of stealing her idea as I came across some big glass diamonds the exact same day I read the article ...design destiny I tell you!

Inspiring Architecture

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/Ri_nLJ0pGEI/AAAAAAAAABk/pOuucyJbnTQ/s200/CIMG0072.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5057515085361649730" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/Ri_nLZ0pGFI/AAAAAAAAABs/zsXEDZM0ShQ/s200/CIMG0077.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5057515089656617042" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/Ri_nL50pGGI/AAAAAAAAAB0/YastAFsQGvs/s200/CIMG0075.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5057515098246551650" />Last week my friend and I went to have an early supper at the restaurant Prado in Balboa Park, in San Diego. The beautiful buildings and surrounding gardens and ponds are a great place to picnic or sketch the surround architecture. On a side note funny story, my friend went here on a date and was remarking about how beautiful the old stone buildings were and her date knocked on them to prove her point about their age and enduring quality. To her surprise and his amusement they were hollow plastic. Today I went to look at a school and had a meeting with an admissions counselor. It means four more years of school, and a drastic change of majors (political science is kind of like interior design) but I have a lot of time on my hands anyway so no big deal. I am excited to be moving into a career path that I think I can be happy in and away from one that was really bumming me out. Other big things this week include a trip to Las Vegas for the weekend.
In other news... If you haven't picked up the Spring edition of In Style Homes the Ruthie Sommers fans out there may want to thumb through. There is a feature on Ruthie's eclectic style and why it works. The other stand out for me in this issue was Darren Randall's L.A. Home. Really lovely mix of fresh graphic flocked fabrics, bright colors, and beautiful traditional architectural features.

"Can you just be whelmed?"

I think you can in Europe.

I am watching this special program "Homes of Paris," on HGTV. Maybe I just haven't had enough Tab Energy this morning, but I am so not feeling it. These places are by far and away running circles around my hovel, however, I haven't seen anything that would make me want to devise a plot to assume the identity of the owner, whom I had locked in the wine cellar, so I could live in their place. I was really excited to see Prosper and Martine Assouline's place and then kind of bummed. I was waiting for a phenomenal library because let's face it if my last name were Assouline I would have a pretty spiffy collection of livres. I suppose they don't like to bring work home with them. One of the more amusing apartments had to be completely gutted starting with the drop ceiling. I just have a hard time picturing a drop ceiling existing in Paris. It just seems wrong and unnatural. Maybe I am putting French taste and style on a pedestal. Anywho still worth a watch because after all you never know what will inspire you.

Apartment Living

Ahh, gotta love living in a city where the average home price is above half a million. It really allows for a mediocrity in apartments and homes that is unrivaled. So this is what I'm starting out with folks. Near future plans in the Bedroom include: Window treatments, replacing our cheap just-until-the-dog-sleeps-on-his-own-bed-duvet and linens with the nice ones packed in the linen closet, using my husbands ratty dresser as firewood and replacing it with a beautiful mirrored one, possibly upholstering the walls in a non-permanent way.
Near future plans in the bathroom: Paint, constructing a shade to go over the Hollywood trailer lighting, framing out the gigronomous mirror, added artwork, and perhaps seagrass or jute to cover the icky poo linoleum. What I am going for is kind of a James Bond feeling in the bathroom. Read: English & Exotic; not Kitschy or Themey.
If you have any genius ideas that spring to mind when you see my forlorn apartment let me know!

Real Estate

Kelly Wearstler fans may find this link :http://guests.themls.com/..%5Cview_photo.cfm?mlsnum=06-148869# of
of interest. Lack of reading material. I think the postman has some sort of aversion to my post box or me because things just take forever to find their way to me. Case in point, how bummed was I to see the April issue of Domino a whole two days ago in the grocery and it still hasn't made it into my hot little hands. Same thing with all other publications I subscribe to, so I am always tempted to buy them on newsstand because I just cannot wait the extra week or whatever to see the contents.
2. While completely creative bent running out of the key paint you need to complete your painting, and being stranded at your apartment. (I am totally afraid of driving and get all manic in cars, which somewhat limits my outings until the Husband makes it home in the afternoon to be my driver).
3. Running out of Tab Energy, which may be one of the more genius products ever. While I don't generally advocate energy drinks or any overly processed food/bev product this stuff is, as I previously stated, genius. Guess I have a date with my French press and will be resorting to coffee.

On a bright note it is Friday. Where did that come from? Seriously when I woke up today I thought it was Wednesday, then again I apparently thought there were spiders on the ceiling. My Husband related to me on the phone how while half awake I started shrieking about spiders. That is what he gets for trying to converse with me at 4:30 in the AM. I can't be held accountable for what I say while not completely conscious, after all.
Tomorrow will be exciting because we are going to look at a house. The place needs a lot of work but I think it could be fun and has a lot of potential if one is willing to put in the work to make the needed updates. It was built in 1975 and if I had to guess has only seen a couple of owners. The lawn is impeccable, which really makes me happy because it seems like people with well-maintained gardens generally have well-maintained homes. We shall see...

The Age of Innocence

Let me begin by saying, I love Kelly Wearstler. Last night she got all Victorian on us with her puffed sleeves. In this photo from Bravo's website she looks like she could be a sassy turn of the century governess. This ensemble more than any of the other's she has debuted on the show really made me giggle when I saw it. Sometimes I think she is trying to make the contestants laugh so that she can get cross with them. OK, but seriously, even though it made me giggle I kind of loved it all at the same time. I really appreciate that she applies the same sense of the unexpected to the way she looks, that she applies to her interiors. I also love that she has the verve to wear some of that stuff, totally defiant, and challenging. I don't know if I could wear some of that stuff out of the house, but hey I don't look like Kelly either. Anywho, it totally amuses me and to be honest I more look forward to seeing what Kelly will wear (and how Margaret Russell will react, if at all) then to the rooms the contestants turn out.
In addition to Kelly's take on the Gibson girl, yesterday one of my fave movies was on telly, Oscar Wilde's, The Importance of Being Earnest. If Top Design were filmed live I might be tempted to say Kelly had watched it also and had been inspired. OK now this is so silly but wouldn't Oscar Wilde and Kelly Wearstler be really fun dinner party guests together? I imagine lots of Lillet, lots of high fashion, lots of wit, and roaring with laughter all evening in the garden.

Close but no cigar...

When Style Court posted about a Holly Golightly inspired room, I was so inspired I popped Breakfast at Tiffany's right into my DVD player. She was right why hadn't Domino done a Holly room. Holly Golightly seemed to be the perfect essence of a Domino reading girl. Well today upon further inspection and research (read: lazy magazine re-reading) it appears Domino did give us a brief taste of updated Golightly style in their October 2006 Editor's Craving section. So if any of you have that issue and are so inclined, dig it up, and give your place a Hepburn vibe.

Adventures in DIY

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_izCrHwhbX64/Rf8MUnDB4jI/AAAAAAAAAAc/aAN8j9ZzHss/s200/CIMG0019.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5043763655896850994" />When my Husband and I first moved into our apartment my dog, now our dog, decided that he would sleep on the bed in our room. Initially I didn't really have a problem with this. However, after destroying two duvets (comparatively not so bad, he devoured my Mother's sofa the first month I had him) I had a change of heart. The little pooch needed a bed of his own. So I set out to find one to my liking. Alas, there were none to be found. Then while I was thumbing through the March Elle Decor I noticed in Michael S. Smith's bedroom, his labradoodle had a bed made of fabric that coordinated to Michael's own bed. It occurred to me, "why don't I make the dog bed?" Never mind that I had only sewn once in my life (it was a pot holder, and not a single seam was straight). What I did have was a lot of time on my hands and a ridiculously patient Mother-in-law with a sewing machine. So I set out on the search for fabric. While Michael opted to use his own Indian Flower hemp, his dogs look like they are well behaved and mannerly, I chose a stain-resistant, heavy, durable outdoor material to stand up to my mischievous pup. I liked this fabric because it reminded me of a cabana. So here is my first foray into sewing ever, and I think it turned out pretty well. I'm really glad I used the black piping. I think it really pops next to the turquoise stripes. Hopefully it last longer than the duvets.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

So you're out of college and maybe your St. Patrick's Day plans no longer consist of binge drinking and either you or someone in your immediate vicinity passing out from imbibing just a touch to much Guinness. Just because you don't want to be a lush doesn't mean you can't celebrate with Guinness. This time however, pass on the drinks and pass out on some super cute fluffy bed linens offered up by Lulu Guinness. I think it is probably in our chemical composition to absolutely loooove makeovers. Make overs for people, pets, homes, whatever. If there are before and after pictures count me in! Since I spend a lot of time at home, correction: all my time at home, I get to watch a lot of television programming. Naturally I am drawn to ones that focus on interior design and you know, I'm feeling a little underwhelmed (this includes the much anticipated Top Design). Sometimes I see the "exciting" after and I actually say to the screen, "That's the after? Blah." But like any bad habit, I can't stop. These design shows have made me wonder two things and I would love to know your opinions on them;

1) Is it worse to have bad taste or no taste at all (for definition purposes we will say that people with bad taste seek out icky things while people with no taste don't really have a preference)?

2) If you did have only $1000 to spend on a room what would you spend the money on to make the most dramatic change?

In the words of Linda Richman, "Discuss."

My Latest Obsession (Vol. 1)

Lately I am just obsessed with pineapples! Maybe it is because I miss the Gulf Coast, who knows? Whatever the reason, I am obsessed with some obsession sauce on the side! So here are a couple of things that have struck my fancy. To the left are a pair of simply, and ridiculously gorgeous Maison Jansen table lamps, available at Thomas Brillet Inc. Added interest: Used by Miles Redd in Shyama Patel's Manhattan flat, featured in the November 2006 Elle Decor. Although, now that I've told you where to find this pair don't sneak off and steal them from underneath me because I am saving up for them, I swear!

Definitely on the more affordable side is this pineapple-mango candle housed in, what else, a white ceramic pineapple. Now I know on the first post I made that nasty comment on figurines, but I don't think that this is a figurine categorically. And it smells like a mango mojito. These are available in two sizes petite (around $16) et grande (around $50)at your local White Barn Candle Co. I think both sizes might have a new home on my bathroom vanity.(Seriously is it wrong to love these?)

And last but certainly not least a pineapple toile wallpaper from Timorous Beasties. You know a Southern girl can't resist toile! I think this would look absolutely fabulous on a ceiling. This wall covering does a great job of joining fun, fresh, colors with a traditional decorative element. (Don't worry they offer some not fun (?), traditional colorways too)
Anyway, if those aren't reason enough to incorporate some Pineapple into your interiors, keep in mind that Pineapples are symbolic of hospitality, another Southern girl staple.

Why didn't somone tell me about this sooner?

If you are like me and have an adorable husband with a penchant for tossing anything from financial statements to periodicals in the trash bin, just to have the desk cleared, you may want to acquaint yourself with Zinio. Zinio allows readers of fab publications like Elle Decor to order electronic back issues. This is genius because A) sometimes the print versions are scarce/non existent B) it has live web links C) it has a great zoom-y feature so you can check out that Brunschwig & Fils fabric really close D) you don't have to worry about your husband tossing it, unless he is fond of getting rid of electronics as well. However, we all know that a man would never get rid of anything electronic even if it actually needed to be thrown out.

Get thee to Zinio.com!

Maiden Voyage

This my first blog post, so it is kind of exciting in that new things type way. In this first post I'm going to cover some things that have really started to bother me, and maybe some of you out there can comiserate.

Things that are horrible/must be stopped:

1. Now that I am married and stay at home I am worried that my taste in things will begin to deteriorate and that if asked what my ideal "style" is I would say "French country," or even worse, "something from like...Tuscany?" If I see one more DIY show that chokes some housewife's living room with eighty shades of yellow and blue I'm going to wretch. Or better yet faux plaster/stucco etc. Can we see some real French country by way of aix en Provence? I want to see laid back, well-edited, elegant rooms not yellow damask ruffles.

2. Guests using books (expensive and otherwise) as beverage coasters. Who started this, and when did it become acceptable for you to put your soda on my 200$ book?

3. A certain bespectacled individual on Top Design. Unnecessarily rude to others, and nothing to back it up with.

4. Ridiculously sub-par housing options on the west coast. Seriously I don't mind doing some work and renovating, in fact I welcome the challenge. However in my search for a home/condo (who can afford an actual house out here?) I have seen more than a dozen houses with mint green carpet. What is that about? You know, it isn't just in a single room either; it is in every room of the house. Is this a California thing I didn't get the memo on?

5. Figurines. (E.g.; Sad clowns, precious moments, etc.)

6. Roommates who use your flat whisk to mash potatoes
